Kill Weeds Now, Not Later

May 27, 2025

So far, this spring has been moving quite fast. We received much-needed rain earlier this week and, so far, crops are looking pretty good. We just need some warm weather to get the corn growing and help dry the fields dry.

Next week we will be starting in on the second pass of corn chemicals. The fields that I have scouted are starting to break and if the sun comes out and raises temperatures the corn is going to take off in a hurry. Now is the time to be walking corn fields to see what needs to be in the chemical mix to kill any weeds that may be starting to pop up. While walking through these fields you may think that the weeds that you see are small and can wait a week or so, but it is better to spray them now. There are not near as many growing points, and a small weed is much easier to kill than a tall weed.

Also be sure to add a second residual to the program to keep new weeds from sprouting later in the season. We have received the rain and will receive the warmth; we just need to do our part in controlling the weeds to get this corn crop to the finish line.
