Fall Spraying to Manage Resistant Weeds

Harvest is moving right along in our area, with a good amount of corn already out of the field and many growers switching over to soybeans. To date, I don’t think we’ve ever had this much crop out this early. Many growers have commented that, at the current pace, they’ll be finished before Halloween. Wrapping up harvest early will leave plenty of time for additional field work later in the season.
As you’re harvesting, take a moment to evaluate weed control from this past season. We had a lot of rain, which delayed some applications and reduced the effectiveness of residual herbicides. In recent years, we’ve talked about the benefits of fall spraying to get ahead of winter annual weeds like marestail—one of our most persistent problems.
With harvest ahead of schedule, this is a great opportunity to get those fall applications done. Fall spraying is generally more economical than spring-applied herbicides, and most products offer flexibility for either corn or soybeans the following year.
