Harvest Season: Taking Notes for Next Year

Sep 15, 2025

Harvest has started in our area, and with the heat and breeze this weekend there will likely be more combines in the field than sitting next to the shop. From the few fields that have already been harvested, the message is the same: yields are good, but not as strong as last year. Heavy rain and disease moved into this year’s crop and trimmed off some of the top-end yield.

While you are harvesting, it is a good idea to keep a notebook with you in the cab. Taking notes in the field will help you make better decisions for the future. Here are a few things worth keeping track of:

  • Which hybrids handled disease pressure well and which ones did not

  • Areas with weed pressure that may need extra attention next season

  • Yield differences between hybrids and across fields

Weed problems that show up this fall will likely carry over into next year. Recording those issues now will help when you sit down to make herbicide plans. Keeping track of hybrid performance is also valuable. Some hybrids may shine in one field but struggle in another.

At the end of harvest, you can take your notes to your agronomist. Together you can review what worked and what did not and build a stronger plan for the next crop year. Harvest is just getting underway, but it is never too early to prepare for next season.

SFG has agronomists ready to go over your notes with you and help create the best plan for your fields.
