Fall Fertilizer Decisions

The crops have really changed over the last 10 days. If it wasn’t for the rain we received, combines would probably be out in the field starting harvest. While waiting for the fields to dry out, I have been getting a lot of calls from growers asking what fertilizer prices are going to look like. Unfortunately, I have to let them know that prices are a little higher than they were last year.
I also let them know there are ways to help reduce the overall cost of fertilizer. A lot of times we put fertilizer on areas of the field that do not need it while not putting enough on the areas that need more. Grid sampling your fields is a good way to put the fertilizer that next year’s crop needs in the right place. Grid sampling can also help reduce the amount of lime a field may need. Many times, I have seen the savings on lime alone pay for the cost of grid sampling.
Before making your fertilizer decisions this fall, take the time to talk to an SFG agronomist about fertilizing your fields. We can help you put the right amount of fertilizer in the right area of the field and make the most of every dollar you spend on fertility.
