Spring Field Preparation Tips

Feb 02, 2026

The fields have been open over the past week, and a lot of dry fertilizer has already been spread. Before long, we’ll be applying anhydrous, followed closely by pre-emerge chemicals and corn planting. Before things get too busy, now is a good time to sit down with your agronomist and make sure your plans are in place.

If your fertilizer and chemicals are being custom applied, take the time to review field maps with the applicator. Be sure all newly seeded waterways, terraces, and field edges are clearly marked so nothing is misapplied. A short conversation and a careful review of maps now can save a lot of time, money, and frustration later.

If you plan to apply chemicals yourself this spring, double-check that you have the correct products and application rates for each field. Again, a quick conversation with your agronomist can prevent costly mistakes and headaches down the road.

Seed placement and population are also critical topics to review. Not every hybrid is suited for every field. When you pick up your seed this spring, make sure hybrids are clearly separated by field and that target populations are identified for each one.

While Mother Nature ultimately controls the season, there are many things we can do now to set ourselves up for success. Take some time over the next couple of weeks to call your SFG agronomist and make sure everything is lined up so we can hit the ground running this spring.
