Don't Forget Micronutrients
Mar 06, 2023
It was a long winter but in a few short weeks we will be back in the fields getting ready for planting to begin. While a lot was done this last fall and winter there is still a lot of dry fertilizer to apply on row crop and hay fields. When booking your dry fertilizer for this spring make sure that you are looking at the bigger picture for your field nutrients.
For a long time, we have looked at phosphorus and potassium for fertilizer needs for our crops. We now know that we need to start thinking about the micronutrients as well. We may have all the macronutrients that we need, but if one or more micronutrients are missing our crop will be cut short. I recommend adding Microsync Pro in with your dry fertilizer this spring. This product is spread at 10 to 20 pounds per acre and contains boron, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and zinc. There is not enough sulfur in this product to supplement a crop, but it will help.
I would also recommend doing an in-season tissue sample to see where your crop is at with micronutrients. If the sample shows that your beans are short on some micronutrients, the next year your corn will be short also. We have seen that Microsync Pro has helped correct micronutrient deficiencies in corn, beans and especially alfalfa. It is an economically prices product that has shown some good ROI in the past. When it comes time to book your fertilizer this spring make sure to ask your SFG agronomist about Microsync Pro.
