Don't let costs alone determine strategy
Nov 15, 2021
In this area harvest is pretty much wrapped up. Yields were far better than expected and we are busy getting things lined up for the next growing season. As you have probably heard, the cost of inputs has gone up drastically. This has been frustrating for many growers who didn’t book them earlier when prices were steadier.
I have heard some growers say that they will cut back on fertilizer to counteract the commodity prices. I have also heard some growers say that they will put more acres into beans since corn will be so expensive to plant. This is not the right thing to do. Don’t let fertilizer prices alone make these determinations. We still need to make good agronomic decisions when it comes to putting in the crop for the 2022 season.
Now would be a good time to grid sample your fields. Some areas of the field may not need as much fertilizer. SFG also has the ability to spread dry fertilizer by soil type. This has been found to use less fertilizer by focusing more on the productive soils and just maintaining the less productive soil. There are ways we can save money while not hurting yield this upcoming growing season. SFG has the technology to help you put the fertilizer on at the right time, place, and rate. Give your SFG agronomist a call to discuss options on fertilizer for the next growing season.
