Fall NH3 Application

Nov 04, 2024

Dry weather this fall allowed harvest to roll along at a record pace. Quite a few growers in my area are getting wrapped up. I was talking to a customer yesterday that said their operations goal was to be done by thanksgiving every year, and this year they were done before Halloween! I guess that shows what can be done if we never have any rain delays.

As I type this, the first major rain event we have had in about 30 days is setting in. Rain is predicted most of this week. That should recharge soil moisture to the point that when things dry up, we will start thinking about our fall NH3 applications. Forecasted temperatures show that we will likely see the soil get cool enough to start applying as soon as November 10th in my area. It possibly could be sooner than that if this rain cools the ground temperature off faster.

Margins are tighter than normal this year and that has come up in a lot of input conversations. That being said, protecting our nitrogen investment is as critical as ever. We only get one chance to protect our fall applied NH3 and it has been proven over the years to give us a positive ROI.
