Take Notes for 2025
Sep 18, 2024
I have just started to see a few combines out in the fields. What I have heard from those farmers is that the corn was coming in around 20% and yielding very well. Another week of high temperatures and low humidity and a lot of the corn in this area will be ready to be picked. I am guessing that the shorter season beans are still 10 to 14 days out from being ready to harvest.
We will be very busy the next two months, but it is important to keep next years crop in mind while in the fields. Bringing along a notebook as you harvest is helpful as you can keep notes on what has worked in your fields this year and what hasn’t. Keeping track of how the different hybrids are yielding can help you make seed selection decisions for the next year. There are always new hybrids every year that are worth trying but keeping track of the ones that worked this year is important. Also keep track of weed escapes that you can only see in corn from the combine seat. If an area of the field has a weed problem this year there is a good chance that the same area will have a weed problem the next year.
Yes, it is going to be a very busy next couple of months, but taking notes now during harvest will help you for next years crop.
