Storing Fall Harvests for Summer Feed

Oct 14, 2024

Harvest is under way during the good weather we are experiencing. The crops are yielding good, which may be challenging available space for storage. Long term storage of feedstocks may require some extra effort following harvest.

The bins that are stuffed full to the roof need the peak pulled out of them. This allows the grain to have some air space so it doesn’t gain in moisture from the roof condensation. The air space also allows for monitoring of the grain top so that any clumping can be broken up before bridging across the top of the grain. Regular monitoring on a monthly basis may extend the storage time so there are no surprises in the summer months. Good quality feedstuffs lead to better gains for the livestock that are fed.
